The Crucifixion

2017.09.14

Here you'll find some of the feature films that will participate this year at the Official Selection of the 28th Horror & Fantasy Film Festival, that will take place between October 28 and November 3.

Les Affamés (2017). Robin Aubert. Canada

In a small, remote Quebec village, things have changed. Locals are not the same anymore –their bodies are breaking down and they’ve developed a mighty attraction for flesh–. They’re known as the affamés, the hungry ones. A handful of survivors try to get away. Zombies have come to Quebec in this hyper-real look production with blood-curdling scenes, a gallows humour and antiheroes who may be the last hope.

Bad Black (2016). Nabwana IGG. Uganda

Welcome to Wakaliwood, where they produce "da best of da best movies". In the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, a group of film and martial arts buffs, led by Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (IGG), dedicated their time over the past few years to making home-brewed, ridiculously low budget films – featuring action, kung-Fu, fantasy, a large dose of humour and very little shame. In this film, which took the audience award at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, a timid physician is trained by a ghetto kid named Wesley Snipes to save his family.

Before We Vanish (2017). Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Japan

Shinji comes home completely changed after being gone for a few days. When he left, his relationship with his wife Narumi was in crisis; now Shinji is loving and tender with her and everyone else he encounters. At the same time, a family is brutally murdered in the city. A reporter begins to investigate. The most important Japanese directors of the past two decades are responsible for this sci-fi fable that delves into the human soul. Their previous work includes Journey to the Shore (2014), Creepy (2016) and Le Secret de la chambre noire (2016).

Black Hollow Cage (2017). Sadrac González-Perellón. Spain

Thirteen-year-old Alice lives with her father Adam in a huge house in the middle of the woods, following an accident in which the girl lost her mother and part of her right arm. Alice is very closed. She hates her father, whom she blames for the accident, hates the physical therapy and hates her new electronic arm which she can barely manage to us. The girl has a deep relationship with Beatrice, a female wolf dog she calls "mama", who talks through an electronic translation device hanging around its neck.

The Crucifixion (2017). Xavier Gens. USA

Based on true events, The Crucifixion tells the story of a priest who is jailed in Romania for the murder of a nun on whom he was performing an exorcism. A investigative journalist named Nicole Rawlins strives to determine whether he in fact murdered a mentally ill person, or if he lost the battle with a demonic presence – a presence she herself might be experiencing... Directed by Xavier Gens, one of the genre classics of the past decade with titles including Frontière(s) (2007), The Divide (2011) and this year, Cold Skin (2017).

The Endless (2017). Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead. USA

After fleeing a cult years ago as children, brothers Justin and Aaron receive a video from their former "family". They argue about what to do since they've spent half their lifetimes trying to forget the place, and finally decide to go back to find out what's going on. Inexplicable happenings begin to occur once they're there. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are back with us at the Festival, where in earlier editions they brought their features, Resolution (2012) and Spring (2014).

Jupiter's Moon (2017). Kornél Mundruczó. Hungary-Germany

Aryan is a Syrian refugee who, together with his father and other immigrants, try to cross the Hungarian border. They are fired at by the police and Aryan is shot a number of times. But instead of killing him, his wounds amazingly give him the power to levitate. Enclosed in a refugee camp, he escapes, with help from Dr. Stern, who tries to take advantage of Aryan's miraculous new powers. In this thriller, the supernatural is combined with one of today's great tragedies. By the same directors responsible for the impressive 2014 film White God.

Meatball Machine Kodoku (2017). Yoshihiro Nishimura. Japan

Some bloody aliens who want to conquer the planet invade a Tokyo neighbourhood. They turn the people into killer cyborgs who set out to destroy anything in their path. A timid debt collector who isn't affected by the necroborgs because of a terminal illness becomes the last hope for the human race in this remake of the original 2005 film directed by the master of special effects, Yoshihiro Nishimura. Nishimura has worked with the most celebrated Japanese filmmakers of the genre in such movies as Tokyo Gore Police (2008) and Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl (2009), shown at the Festival.

The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One (2016). Shane Abbess. Australia

When an imminent crisis threatens to end the life of all the inhabitants of the planet Osiris, Lieutenant Sommervillem, who works for Exor, the company that manages the colony and is about to end it, begins a race against the clock to save his daughter, who's visiting at the time. Together with the recently escaped fugitive Lombrock and other partners he picks up along the way, they have to face monstrous creatures to meet their objective: save the girl. An Australian production starring Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Rachel Griffiths and Temuera Morrison.

Los resucitados (2017). Arturo de Bobadilla. Spain

Madrid, 1994. Arturo de Bobadilla begins to film his feature Los resucitados, inspired in the legends of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, a project plagued with mysteries starring Santiago Segura and Paul Naschy. The film was made in different formats and edited in 1997. Some people say that they saw it in a private showing at that year's festival. Shortly afterwards, the first copy disappeared and the original material couldn't be found. Two decades later the material reappeared and the film was newly edited based on the original screenplay.
