Atama Yama
(2002). Koji Yamamura. Japón. 10 minutos
Surrealist Japanese short telling the tale of a head-mountain or mountain-head. A man who wastes nothing, not even cherry stones, discovers a plant growing out of the top of his head. Deciding to stop pruning it, it grows and grows until turning into a cherry tree, the Japanese national tree. It soon becomes a popular excursion spot. Don’t forget the space problems existing in Japanese cities, due to which any free space is a boon, no matter where it is. Perspectives disappear in this short accompanied by shamisen music, winner of an award at Annecy, whiles reminding us of works by the great Bill Plympton (like Nose Hair) due to its use of the human body, its humour always verging on the absurd, and the freedom of the drawings.
