Louis Feuillade, master of film series, one of the pioneers of European
cinema, author of over 800 movies, directed in 1913 and 1914 the first
big-screen adaptation of the adventures of Fantômas. A character
created by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre in 1912 (he was actually
christened Fantômus, but the editor’s short-sightedness finally
established his name), this elegant thief, in top hat and tails and with
a mask over his eyes, starred in countless novels and various films throughout
the 20th century. A year after his birth, Fantômas appears in this
five-episode series directed by Feuillade and starring René Navarre
as the good bandit with Edmond Bréon as his bitter enemy, Inspector
Juve. |
