Friedrich Hieronymus, the Baron of Munchhausen, was a historical German
character converted with the passing of time into a legend. Extremely
popular in his day, he would tell endless fantastic stories about himself,
his deeds on the battlefield, his voyage to the Moon... all put together
by Rudolf Erich Raspe and Gottfried August Bürger in their respective
late 18th century novels. He already starred in a short by the father
of cinema, Georges Méliès, as early as 1911 and has since
then appeared in various films, such as this version directed by Josef
von Báky, the free adaptation by Karel Zeman and the film by Terry
Gilliam. The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen, filmed
during the Nazi period, is the most famous German title on this famous
character, an extremely entertaining movie for all audiences. |
