| The
invisible man is one of the fantasy genre’s most classic characters,
in cinema and literature alike. He has more or less continuously appeared
on film screens all over the world throughout the 20th century, from the
classic Universal movie directed by James Whale, with Claude Rains as
the invisible man in the scenes where he can be seen, based on the short
story by H.G. Wells, and its various sequels, until Paul Verhoeven’s
recent Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon heading the cast.
Always within the limits of fantasy, John Carpenter made his version in
the early nineties. Based on a book by H.F. Saint and starring Chevy Chase,
Daryl Hannah and the great Sam Neill, the film weaves its way between
the paths of science fiction and the trails of romantic comedy. |
