| While
talking to the director, a person who has triumphed with a series of shorts
and music videos, a lover of home-made special effects, we heard him say
that The Locals is “a Gothic movie, about ghosts,
made traditional style, the target audience of which are young 21st century
audiences”. If we’re looking for references, Greg Page
has turned up a number of great ones: The Sixth Sense
and The Others. Redefining it, he says that it’s
really scary, that it takes place over a single night and brings us into
contact with everything that’s ever frightened us: Darkness, Death,
and what comes after it. At the end of the day, The Locals could
be another of those stupid films about stupid teenagers who get themselves
into a jam, but with a good screenplay and certain turns of the screw
to keep it just “on the other side”. |
