The director, David Morley, had things very clear in his head: he wanted to make a French zombie movie, respecting the sacrosanct laws of the genre and on the other hand tell an absolute love story, in an intimate way, where the person you love the most is the most dangerous. His inspiration? Cronenberg’s The Fly, Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Carpenter’s The Thing. The landscape? Once again a pure, clean, icy surface: around Chamonix in the middle of winter. A refuge? An abandoned sanatorium, aseptic (“neutral, cold, passionless” according to the Royal Academy’s definition). The story? A virus that crosses the mountain and turns people in to cannibal humanoids. The challenge? Make sure that these human beasts keep something of their DNA and the spectator can sense the actor, the man and the woman under all that putrefying flesh.
