Nazis always make good cinema. Of course this is not politically correct but it is cinematographically verifiable. From The Damned to Inglorious Basterds where Coronel Landa loses a hundred Napoleonic soldiers. In terms of looking good, they look great even after they die, and in terms of zombies, they are pretty cool. It’s not the same to be disembowelled by any old low grade zombie if your bloody carcass can be disposed of by a shiny uniformed lieutenant from the Oberkommando des Heeras (High Command of the Land Army) or a sub-official from the Geheime Staatspolizei (or in other words the Gestapo). Tommy Wirkola’s little film plays this trick to perfection: Nazi zombies decimate a group of zoned-out medical students in an impressive snowy landscape where, logically, blood and intestines are not undesirable. It’s cool.
