Captifs

Captifs

First shown in France only a few days before it went to Sitges, and just two weeks before the Festival here, Captifs, called Caged in English, demonstrates that the idyllic Yugoslavia of the past not only became a body and soul destroying battlefield and the place where Europe exploded with shame but it is also the most inhospitable and at the same time perfect landscape, scenario, continent for any early 21st century horror film. The new (but not at all novice) Yan Gozlan directs this story about three aid workers captured by beings that we know little about but learn to fear through a female character with high cinematographic potential. The sound, and not only the soundtrack composed by the industrial rock guitarist Guillaume Feyler, is highly poignant, creating a bestial presence throughout their ordeal as the main character’s intimate ghosts reach beyond the horror of the outside world.
