An expedition travels to the heart of the Amazon looking for a group of four reporters who disappeared whilst attempting to document the behaviour of wild tribes. The explorers, led by Professor Monroe (Robert Kerman), return although only bringing with them the film shot by the first group in the jungle. This provides a series of films that bear cruel witness to what really happened in the jungle months before. Strongly influenced by mondo films and nourished by calculated controversy that, as a consequence, ended up with Ruggero Deodato behind bars accused of murder –he only just managed to prove his innocence– and the film being confiscated for several days, Cannibal Holocaust became one of the most imitated films but also one of the most forbidden throughout the world due to its realistic documentary look and its explicit and shocking images.
