SEUL CONTRE TOUS (1998). Gaspar Noé. France. 93 min
A butcher (Philippe Nahon) is looking after his newborn daughter after being abandoned by his wife. The years go by and the girl, now a young woman, triggers a tragedy after she gets her first period. Tortured by unfamiliar pain she runs to the butcher's shop to ask her father for help, but on the way she meets a workman who tries to seduce her. Some neighbours see what's happening and take the girl to her father who, when he sees her bloody skirt, can only think that she´s been raped. Beside himself with rage, the man stabs the first workman he sees. First work by the Argentinean director Gaspar Noé, a continuation of his medium length film entitled Carne (1991). "The drama of an ex butcher fighting alone in the depths of his country", or in other words, I Stand Alone, is a claustrophobic story told off camera about a man sent out into the world no longer clinging to a knife but to something potentially more dangerous: his own morals..
