St. Nicholas existed long before anyone (Coca-Cola and Hadom Sundblom) believed in Father Christmas. St. Nicholas handed out gifts to children in the north of Europe (and also in Orio as he is the Patron Saint of this fishing town) on the night of 5th/6th December. But until Dick Maas decided to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, we all believed that he had been a good, wise and generous bishop. The author of Amsterdamned will open our eyes: he was actually an evil and cruel priest from the 16th century who was brought to justice and so promised eternal revenge. When his festival coincides with the full moon (every 36 years) Old Nick gets on his ghost horse and goes on the rampage. Fantasy Europe bows down to this horrific comedy with moments of sheer happiness, like when Nicholas flees across the rooftops (in Amsterdam of course) at full gallop.
