Jaume, our Balagueró, wanted a movie that was “harder, rougher and darker”. And he wanted it with more action, horror and adventure. More claustrophobic. And without a biased camera. And more isolated. Hence the ship setting. Hence the storm. Jaume wanted to link it up to the second instalment, the one where we saw a worm entering Angela. That way they could play around in the script, the camera and the editing so that no-one knew if she was the victim or monster. Like us, Jaume wanted [REC]4 – Apocalypse, the last in the saga, to feature Manuela Velasco. And she’s there, damn right she’s there! Alpha and Omega of this enormously stimulating piece of savage survival that opened Sitges and will infect the box office when it comes (or not) out of the Principal Theatre. Ah, everyone swears on their dead that there will be no more [REC] this Millennium...
