When San Sebastian was consumed by flames in 1813, the city re-emerged from the embers. It was a physical reconstruction, but it was also mental. Donostia forgot its mythical, fantastical past and embraced a modern collective imagination. Beings such as Gaueko, Dragons and Churiscus vanished under the light shed by science. But the Mystery didn’t die; it simply transformed with the scientific method. This is when spiritualism, poltergeists, UFOs and other parapsychological phenomena came about.
The exhibition The Mistery Lighthouse will reconstruct this tour through Mystery. A transmedia, multidisciplinary exhibition to show the work carried out by the Misterio’s team over the course of this year. Videogames, illustrations, installations and videoart are some of the representations of both San Sebastian and Gipuzkoa’s history we have collected throughout 2016.
The Mistery Lighthouse is a project aligned with Conversations, from DSS2016, designed to put the European Culture Capital in synch with the city’s official cultural agenda. A project that came about in collaboration with the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival, being carried out by several different open work groups. Since June of 2016, The Mistery Lighthouse has been carrying out its co-creative work within Kutxa Kultur Enea.
Because the exhibition isn’t the end of the Lighthouse… It will continue until the end of the year, and will end with an inauguration of its latest format: a web documentary.

The original science fiction series, created by Gene Roddenberry, is turning fifty years old. In addition to other spin-offs, five more television series and thirteen feature-length films for cinema have prolonged its influence, so much so that it has practically become a religion to many. Its aesthetic, its belief in progress through technology and encouraging all kinds of different people to live together, as well as unforgettable characters, have all created this pop culture phenomenon.
This exhibition has two large blocks. On one hand, around fifty Spanish illustrators with different styles make their own specific tribute to the saga, commissioned by the artist Mo Caró. On the other, objects from private collections will be shown, organised and catalogued by the Spanish Star Trek Club: autographs, memorabilia, merchandise and reconstructions of some of the "last frontier’s” iconic elements.

Julen Ribas Sasiain was born 9 June, 1981, in Arrasate/Mondragón. From a young age, he showed a special gift for drawing and fine arts. However, he studied a scientific-technical major. In 1999, his career took a 180º turn and he moved to Barcelona to study graphic arts. This is where he discovered comics. Up until then, his clearest references in the comic world had been Tintin and Asterix and Obelix. After spending 3 years in Barcelona, he returned to his native city to work freelance. Since then, he has been working as an illustrator and has published several different comics, as well as children’s stories. His works may be viewed in the Basque Country and France, mainly. Today, he juggles comics with painting.

Outlining Poe takes a sample of photographs and cardboard dioramas the artist Fernando Mircala has made over the past decade in tribute to the literary figure Edgar Allan Poe. First, within the editorial context, with the book Siniestras amadas (Sinsentido, 2009), and then his collaboration in the feature-length film Extraordinary Tales (2014), directed by prestigious animator Raúl García, Mircala has created a world of cardboard sets and figures with his own particular moulding technique, like tiny theatres. His intent was to put the spotlight on the most lyrical and romantic aspect of the American author, stripping him of the atavistic, gloomy and obsolete "Gothicism" with which Poe's universe tends to be represented. To this end, the artist has brought the representation to a sweeter and more stylised expressive terrain, increasing the colour palette, either boldfaced or subtly. He has used concepts from design and architecture, leading do a colourful, bright dream world that shows the viewer a sampling of velvety paper “toys,” with a new, friendlier way of illustrating and feeling what Poe envisaged in his centenarian melancholy today
