"Fantastic Japan, 21st century" cycle at the festival

Ju-on

The Festival has always dedicated special attention to Japanese cinema, present every year with several titles in its official programme, and in various seasons and publications: Japanese fantasy and horror cinema (season in 2001 and no. 5 in the Festival's Book Collection) and Japanese animated cinema (retrospective in 2008 and book no. 11).

Throughout its edition, the San Sebastian fest has screened movies by the leading Japanese makers of the genre in recent years: Takashi Miike, Shinya Tsukamoto, Sion Sono, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hideo Nakata, Takashi Shimizu, Noboru Iguchi, Hideaki Anno, Tomoo Haraguchi... Many of whom have actually come to the city to present their films.

This year, thanks to the sponsorship of the EU-Japan Fest Foundation and in coordination with San Sebastian 2016, the Festival returns to Japan with three main events: a film season, the presence of guests and a special publication.

This new retrospective will see the screening of around ten films produced in the new millennium, from 2000 onwards, and directed by important authors, from the worlds of the best known fantasy films and of B movies.

Some of these contemporary moviemakers will visit the festival in its early days where, in addition to presenting their films, they will participate in an open meeting with aficionados.

A book will also be issued to accompany the season, continuing with the Festival's book collection (this will be no. 15), coordinated by Daniel Aguilar (curator of the season) and Antonio José Navarro.
