On January 21st, the night of its release, Sundance howled. The following days, trying to get over the shock, the critics tweeted adjectives like “bold, thrilling, terrifying” proclaiming that it was “the most impressive film ever made about teenagers”. They compared it, of course and with reason, to any of the instalments of The Purge and recommended each and every one of the 24 numbers on its soundtrack, composed by Ian Hultquist. We know the plot: 17,000 people in the small town of Salem have been hacked. Lily Coulson is accused. She and her friends must defend themselves. They’re wearing red polyester raincoats. And are armed with assault weapons. The director is Sam Levinson, moviemaker, actor, writer and son of Barry.
