Cannes knows how to be fantastic. And the enormously powerful Un Certain Regard section has no qualms about giving awards to a fantasy work. If it’s the best. Just like this piece by the Nordic director born in Teheran, author of the tremendous Shelley (2016). Based on a work by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the man we all love so much for his Let the Right One In, the movie has no trouble crossing any gender border or convention (referring too to those of the human species) in a combination of supernatural horror, Nordic noir, love story and much more. There’s a woman. A customs officer. With a great sense of smell. There’s a big guy. Strange. He smells odd. But somehow perhaps familiar... At Cannes everyone gave it the im-m-ed-ia-te qualification of “cult movie”. And they were right.
