Sumptuous trip in mega-saturated colours and with a brutal soundtrack of pure synthesized heavy metal from Jóhann Jóhannsson, directed by Panos Cosmatos, son of George –director of Rambo (1985) and Cobra (1986)– and faithful admirer of Cronenberg, as he demonstrated in his Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010). Right from its opening bars we realise his intentions, taking off with a sequence to the sound of King Crimson’s Starless. A happy couple in a cabin coloured with what could be igneous lava. A bunch of Messianic post-hippies. Someone’s going to die. And the peerless Nicolas Cage won’t be amused. With his nose liberally dusted with marching powder, he sets out on an unequalled hunt in a film packed with red-hot irony and a bad temper that had them stunned at Sundance.
