“The day for those of the daytime; the night for those of the night-time”. The eternal phrase of Basque mythology —“Eguna egunekoentzat, gaua gauekoentzat”— is one of the powerful leitmotifs underpinning the third film by Paul Urkijo Alijo and his magnificent photography, art direction, costume and effects teams. A love story runs through scenes in which legends become reality, witches are given dignity, impious priests are lost forever, mushrooms offer poison or release, women drink home-made patxaran liqueur, and the Devil is the exalted billy goat Akerbeltz. Where a dark kiss becomes a kiss of extreme, erotic purity. The soundtrack is by Aránzazu Calleja and Maite Arroitajauregi, but was previously sung by Patti Smith: the night belongs to lovers.
