The story takes place in a near future in which robots have become part of everyday life thanks to a young scientific prodigy, Akira Mizutamari, developer of the Salt home help model. After a series of failures, though, Akira begins to feel he has run out of road. It is then that he hears a friend say that having a girlfriend might give his life a boost. Taking him quite literally, Akira creates Girlfriend Number 0, an android with programmed emotions, who gradually begins to develop her own feelings. Between the clumsiness of a youngster who has never managed to form a relationship, and the confusion of an artificial intelligence learning to feel, they will have to discover whether what is arising between them is love… or something very different.
