Suspense

Suspense

The marvellous story The Turn of the Screw by this American author who wanted to be English called Henry James has been adapted many times, whether these adaptations were official or not. This is maybe the best, managing to bring the subtlety of James’s work to the screen, and the most successful at putting pictures to the words of his ghost story. Jack Clayton directs this film which takes place in an undetermined place called reality, where the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead are breaking down. A teacher is contracted to educate a pair of solitary children who live in an isolated and often worrying mansion.  A fantasy cinema classic. A cinematic jewel.
