A man is on holiday at the seaside early one morning. The beach is deserted and apathy invades him whilst he leafs idly through the newspaper. Suddenly, he notices a buoy out to sea. It’s not very far away and there’s nobody else in the water. Maybe it’s time for a little swim, to shake off his summer laziness and reach this irresistible buoy. He’ll head out to sea, this space that occupies three quarters of the Earth’s surface, favourite holiday spot for some, work for others, both friendly and dangerous. It represents an empty space that he walks towards, a place that welcomes, attracts, a place from where mermaids (or buoys) attract sailors (or swimmers) with their sweet calls from the unknown.
