French super-production directed more than a decade ago by one of contemporary European cinema’s leading names, Luc Besson, director of movies including The Big Blue or The Professional and producer of box-office hits like the Taxi sagas or Transporter, with Moebius designing a number of sequences for this work of obvious Métal Hurlant inspiration. Evil threatens life on Earth. The only weapon capable of staving it off and saving the world is “the fifth element”. And only a New York cab driver (played by a Bruce Willis taking his first steps on the road to becoming a regular saviour of humanity, shortly before taking off into space to save the Earth from destruction and being endowed with superhero status by Shyamalan) can see to it that the mission is a success.
