Professor Henry Harrington has been investigating and denouncing Julian Karswell’s demonological activities for some time, and then suddenly dies in a strange accident. The American psychologist John Holden, little given to believing in things that cannot be explained and recently arrived in London to help Harrington, learns of his death and continues his investigation with the help of the professor’s niece. His rational thinking is challenged as he finds out more about Karswell and his world. The horror master Jacques Tourneur, responsible for classics such as Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie or The Leopard Man, directs this film based on a story by the British writer M. R. James.
