The Devil Rides Out

Terence Fisher takes a look at Satanism in this movie based on a novel by Dennis Wheatley, a specialist in occultism widely read at the time. The screenplay was commissioned by Hammer from the great North American writer Richard Matheson, author among many others of I Am Legend or The Incredible Shrinking Man. An aristocratic Christopher Lee challenges the forces of Evil, a group of Devil-followers headed by the highly disturbing and dangerous Mocata, masterly played by Charles Gray: his eyes reflect the power of the obscure, the look of Evil. Unsettling, packed with symbols, chickens and goats, chalk circles and ancient invocations (which, spoken by Lee, seem destined to save our souls), orgies and sacrifices, this struggle between Good and Evil is one of Hammer’s most unusual titles.
