Sauna

Sauna

No, this isn’t the movie directed by Andreu Martín or a gay video rented from a sex shop by the Festival. Nor is it, although some folk would actively and passively swear to the contrary, a film à la Tarkovski. Not at least in the bad sense. But yes in the desolation of its earthly and human landscapes. Sauna is a blood-curdling, unhealthy Finnish flick (nothing in common with our adorable wine-growing Kaurismäki) taking place at a strange time (following a cruel war, Russia and Sweden have to set the limits of their empires, share Finland and, in the doing, decide what to do with the 73 people who live on a land not to be found on any maps...) and in an ungodly world where wolves claw their eyes out and the sauna is a place of birth and death.
