Bedevilled

The director, Jang Cheol-soo, is the new golden yet perverse child from South Korea. Kim Ki-duk’s director’s assistant, he took this first feature film of his all the way to Cannes. The market critics on high, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, chewed him up and pronounced that not even arty film lovers or gore fans would like it. And so just to be contrary, spectators at the Austin Festival named Bedevilled winner of the Audience Award. Magnificent story of two women, one a city girl, an unbearable yuppie (fantastically portrayed right at the start of the film!), and the other abused, mistreated, raped and used as a whore on an island that is officially paradise with everything from humour, guts, revenge, eroticism, social climbing and blood, a whole load of blood.
